What's growing in the Spring Hill fields right now? Here's a seasonal calendar of what we expect--but remember that Mother Nature has a way of presenting us with the unexpected!
- January
- In January we meet with Spring Hill’s Core Group to plan for the coming season. Seeds are ordered and field plans made.
- February
- We invite members to join for another season and prepare the greenhouse for planting.
- March
- The first of March means it time to plant onions in the greenhouse! It’s also time to tap the maple trees and begin making maple syrup.
- April
- Things are just starting to get busy. The greenhouse fills up and by the end of the month, we’re planting peas and potatoes in the field.
- May
- Greenhousee work continues but we’re gradually spending more time in the field. Beets and carrots will be planted. The first plantings of broccoli and cabbage will go in and by the end of the month we’ll be putting out the tender tomatoes, peppers and melons. Our annual Spring Work Day will be held the end of this month or the beginning of June.
- June
- It’s time to cultivate all those crops! The greens are growing well by now and about the 20th or so of the month, we’ll begin harvesting. The first harvests will bring lettuce, spinach, radishes, scallions, broccoli and strawberries.
- July
- The summer harvests have begun in earnest: cucumbers and summer squash are added to members’ bags along with fresh garlic and mixed fresh herbs. Green beans and cabbage and beets, potatoes, carrots and onions are also coming into their own.
- August
- The height of the summer is here with tomatoes, eggplant, peppers and melons and lots of basil all joining in.
- September
- In addition to most of the July and August bounty, we now get different varieties of potatoes, more garlic, plus the earliest of the winter squash. Plan to come to the farm for our annual Fall Work Day. Help harvest potatoes, squash and take home a pumpkin for Halloween.
- October
- October brings all the potatoes, squash and onions you could ever want, plus Brussels sprouts, kale, broccoli and, of course, pie pumpkins.
- November
- We’ll begin the month with a Harvest Celebration in the Twin Cities giving thanks for the season. Two more deliveries of storage vegetables come this month. Thanksgiving tables will be filled with the bounty of Spring Hill.
- December
- One final delivery for those who signed up for our “December Delivery” which includes onions, potatoes, winter squash, beets, cabbage, and garlic. And then it all begins again!
