Twenty Years!

It's the beginning of the twentieth year of Spring Hill Community Farm. When we think back to those early years we marvel at how much the farm has changed: we have replaced all the outbuildings, created an infrastructure that supports a small-scale vegetable operation, and generally improved the farm. We are also struck by how much remains the same: We still battle weeds, weather, and pests. And most importantly though, we still hold to those core elements of what we collectively call Spring Hill Community Farm: we all share the risks and bounty of farming, we base our price on the cost of production, we emphasize a collective decision making with the core group, we emphasize the strength and beauty of community, and we employ a member-based delivery system. This is one of our favorite parts—we count ourselves fortunate and enriched by getting to know all of you.

In the meantime, the season is getting underway here at the farm. The seed order is in and we are looking forward to the arrival of the hundreds of different seed packs - that box of seeds somehow with sun, water and a little labor transforms itself into thousands of pounds of vegetables! Some of the changes we hope to implement this year are based on the survey that many of you completed (thanks!). We are adding to the diversity of greens, including trying some lettuce varieties that should help us increase the number of weeks we send it. We are beefing up carrot production, and will be careful not to send too many cucumbers at one time. We also will be planting rhubarb to add to the spring diversity. (This will take a couple of years to come into full production.) We look forward to seeing you again!!
