Next week I think we’ll be sending some chioggia (red striped) beets and maybe the fennel. I know I keep talking about cabbage but with the melons coming, we’re holding off on another heavy round thing at the bottom of the bag.

August Payments Due!
Many of you chose to make two payments to the farm, the second one of which is now due. If you’re not sure of your balance, give me a call or send an e-mail and I will let you know.

Harvesters Needed in August
In August we need people on August 25th and August 28th. If you are available on one of these dates please contact our delivery coordinator, Michele Gersich. She can be reached at mgersich@att.net or 612-378-0380.

Fall Work Day
Mark your calendars for Sunday,
September 23rd, our annual Fall Work Day at the farm. Details coming soon.

Farm News
The days and weeks are all beginning to meld together now and it’s hard to remember exactly what we did last week. I do know we’ve been missed by the last few opportunities for rain and it’s time for another good one out here. The irrigation routine is on once again, particularly on some recently transplanted crops.

We did get a start on the onion and shallot harvest with members this past Friday and Saturday. The onions and shallots look great, by the way. On Friday Elaine and her daughter Bianca joined us along with their friend Theresa and her daughter and son, Claire and Peter. As we sat down to lunch, Claire asked her mother if her next birthday party could be at the farm – a compliment of the highest kind, we think!

David and I escaped from the farm last Thursday evening for Land Stewardship Project’s 25th Anniversary Celebration. It was a fine celebration of an organization that works hard to keep family farmers on the land. If you aren’t a member of Land Stewardship Project, consider becoming one. You’ll be kept in touch with issues facing farmers, rural communities and anyone that eats.

You can visit their web site at: www.landstewardshipproject.org or call them at 651-653-0618 or 612-722-6377 for more information.

Spring Hill shallots drying down on a hay rack.

Our latest purchase – a potato digger. Pulled by a tractor (though originally designed for a horse) this piece of equipment will dig the potatoes, shake off some dirt and lay them on the top of the soil for us to bag.

raspberries

The raspberries are coming on strong. If you’re here on a Saturday or Tuesday, they’re yours for the picking!
