Coming Soon
Tomatoes and peppers will keep coming for awhile – that’s assuming we don’t get a frost anytime soon. It may be salsa making time next week with some fresh cilantro and jalapeno peppers on the way. We may have a cabbage ready and for greens, we’ll have a bunch of Swiss chard.

Tomatoes
Tomatoes have begun ripening! This year we’ve planted two rows of Sungold Cherry tomatoes and 4 rows of heirlooms including Green and Red Zebra, German Strawberry and Black Plum.

We don’t think we’ll ever get enough cherries to send everyone a pint all at once so we’ll be rotating them by pick-up site. We may do the same with the heirlooms. We’ll see what the yield is like. In any case, in an attempt to get all of these lovely tomatoes to you with as little damage as possible, they’ll travel in boxes from the farm to your pick-up site and then our delivery folks will set the bag and/or box of tomatoes carefully in each bag of vegetables. You’ll want to look for them so that as you transfer your bag to your car and house, the tomatoes don’t wiggle their way down the bag only to be smushed by potatoes!

Farm News
The garlic is now all tucked in the greenhouse and curing. With that task done, we’ve gone on weed patrol this week. Our work crew will confirm that many a weed was pulled this past week and, while there are still areas of the garden needing work, it generally feels manageable. That’s a good thing, since much of our attention turns to harvesting this time of year. Beans, cucumbers, zucchini and summer squash all require a fair bit of picking time. If any of those crops are left for more than two days, we’re in trouble!

We’ve also been on wood chuck patrol. As I write this, Mike and David are picking up a live trap in hopes of capturing “Chuckie” who has been eating melons! Our faithful Sunny has been put back on deer patrol after a short rest. He went back on duty when we found the deer had returned to the garden to eat some of their favorites-- chard, beets and beans.

No doubt, you have noticed our potatoes have a good case of scab. The damage is purely cosmetic and, while we wished they looked prettier, we are pleased with the yields. Generally high organic matter in soil is a good thing, but in the case of potatoes, it provides an ideal setting for scab. We may need to look for resistant varieties.

We made a trip this weekend to the St. Croix County Fair in Glenwood City. It’s just the right size fair for me. In a couple of hours we watched some “Team Penning,” looked at the 4-H exhibits, took a ride on the Tilt-A-Whirl and had our fill of fair food, including cheese curds – we do live in Wisconsin, after all!
