Week #4 Tuesday, July 3rd - Saturday, July 7th, 2007 Downloadable Word .doc for printing
In your bag
Lettuce (red summer crisp and either a green summer crisp or romaine)
Scallions, Cabbage, Beets, Cucumbers
Broccoli OR Zucchini /Summer Squash
Fennel, Basil
Coming Soon
Looking at the garden, my best guess puts carrots in the bag next week along with some new potatoes. Cucumbers will continue and if we can get some irrigation – or better yet – rain on the summer squash, we can keep it coming. We’ll have some kohlrabi, and I think one more round of broccoli. I see some very tiny beans on the bean plants so they’re not too far away!
Oh, and how could I forget, some fresh garlic.
Tuesday Harvest Help Needed
We need help on upcoming Tuesdays.
Beginning Tuesday, July 17th, we need more help each Tuesday throughout the season. If you haven’t signed up for your day yet, please consider coming on a Tuesday. If you're here via internet, view our calendar. By clicking on individual months, you can see where help is still needed. (We need 4 households/vehicles each harvest day.) Going back to the home page, click on “sign-up” to send Michele Gersich an e-mail with your preferred date and she will add you to the calendar. If you prefer the telephone, give Michele a call at 612-378-0380.
Farm News
There is an International network called Willing Workers On Organic Farms. Its purpose is to connect farmers needing help with those who want to work on farms. Many workers use it as a way to travel cheaply and meet people as they go. Sometimes workers stay at a place just for a few days, other times a few months. The workers are known as WWOOFers (think barking like a dog). A couple of our neighbors take part in this program hosting mostly young people from across the country and sometimes the world. They’ve had WWOOFers from as close as St. Paul and as far away as South Korea.
It occurred to me recently that each Tuesday and Saturday we have our version of WWOOFers at the farm. It really is delightful, all these willing hands arriving here ready to work – and we do get a fair bit of work done. Of course we always get all of the vegetables washed, packed and delivered to their destination. Usually there’s a couple of things to harvest and sometimes (and this always feels like a bonus) we get some sort of work project done as well. This past week on Tuesday, we planted a fall batch of chard and a late planting of cucumbers. On Saturday the crew dismantled the pea trellis, put cages on the roma tomato plants, and planted some lettuce and kale. So, thanks to all you WOOFers. We really appreciate it. Oh, and by the way, dance, pray, hang out the laundry, wash the car – WE NEED RAIN!
