This Week's Farm News & Recipes
Nicole Henry & Erik Rogers were coming out to the farm to work on Monday. When the forecast predicted rain, they opted for writing the “Farm News” and sharing recipes!

Next Week’s Bag
We’ll send along another round of pie pumpkins and some delicata squash. We’ll also begin harvesting the Brussels sprouts. Hopefully we’ll have two weeks of those. They look great this year. We’ve just been waiting for some cooler nights to sweeten them up! We’ve got more carrots and garlic and potatoes for you!

REMEMBER!

St. Frances Cabrini Church – flyer coming soon!

• Spring Hill’s last deliveries – Tuesday, Oct 23rd

Farm News
We have been organic Co-op and local farmer market shoppers for years, motivated by the higher quality produce and meats as compared to commercial chain grocery stores. We thought it was a good thing that the Co-op’s tended to support and buy from local farmers and of course the farmer markets provided this aspect as well.

In 2002, we came to realize that we could take this even one step further, and we began to look into CSAs in the area. Our good friend LouAnn Keleher was already a member of Spring Hill Farm and invited Nicole to join her for a work-day at the farm. The experience of doing some work on a farm, meeting Patty and Mike, seeing the actual farm where the food comes from, and having a friend to share the experience with was all that Nicole needed. Our family became members of Spring Hill Farm the next season. Since then we have in our turn introduced several friends to Spring Hill Farm in an effort to help build a vibrant farm community.

There are several general ‘principles’ that motivate us to be members of Spring Hill Farm; directly supporting local farmers, buying locally and thereby minimizing transportation and use of fossil fuels, and supporting organic-sustainable farming practices, to name just a few. In the end, however, we find that it’s the community of friends and other like-minded people from our neighborhood and region with whom we share the season’s bounty, trips to the farm for work-days and potluck dinners, and our common friendship with Patty and Mike that keep us Spring Hill Farm members.
