Farm Bill Update
It is quite possible that the Senate Agriculture Committee will meet this coming week to make decisions on the future of our food and farm programs. In Minnesota both Senator Norm Coleman and Amy Klobochar serve on the Ag Committee. Now is the time to contact them. They need to hear from you about the policies and programs that will help family farmers, protect our soil and water, and encourage stewardship and conservation on working farmland. For more information about some key issues, go to www.landstewardshipproject.org and look at their “Take Action” page. You can also contact Land Stewardship Project at 612-722-6377.
Farm News
I’m sure it’s no surprise to any of you that we’ve been playing in the mud this week. It is wet out there! Actually we’ve had some incredibly beautiful fall days (I love this time of year) and we’ve been plugging away at gathering up what’s left in the field. When the inevitable prediction of an overnight low of 18 degrees comes around, hopefully we won’t have to scramble too much. Nicole Henry, Erik Rogers and their daughter Serwyn joined us for one of those beautiful days last week. We harvested leeks, roma tomatoes, and washed a bunch of those potatoes that were harvested at the Fall Work Day.
I’m not sure we’ve ever had tomatoes in October. This will be the last week for them, but it does makes eleven weeks of tomatoes! I think I’ve actually had my fill for awhile. We have had them every which way. One of my favorites this year was the recipe we’re sharing this week – “Oven Roasted Tomato and Fresh Thyme Tartines” (tartines being a fancy word for bread). There is something about roasting those tomatoes with garlic that brings out an amazing flavor. Give them a try for a last taste of tomatoes this year.
In the field we have some carrots yet to dig, cabbages and celeriac to harvest, some beets we hope will get a little bigger, broccoli that’s looking close to being ready, Brussels sprouts for the last couple of weeks (they really sweeten up with some frosty weather) and some kale and collard greens – plenty of good eating and a nice variety for our last few weeks of deliveries. Don’t forget to keep picking up your veggies – we will continue with regular weekly deliveries through Tuesday, October 23rd and Saturday, October 27th.
