Week #15 Saturday, Sept 27th - Tuesday Sept 30th

Downloadable Word .doc for printing

In your bag:
Winter Squash - Sunshine
Leeks, Potatoes - Yukon Golds
Onions, Garlic
Sweet Peppers - mix, including reds
Turnips, Carrots
Broccoli
Spinach or Swiss Chard or Lettuce
Roma Tomatoes
Italian Parsley, Rosemary

Some Notes about this week’s Veggies
~You may want to soak your broccoli in a bowl of salt water before cooking.  The soak will drive out any cabbage loopers (green worms) that may be hidden in there.
~Grasshoppers found their way to the spinach patch.  The spinach leaves may have some holes.  The damage is cosmetic only.
~These  Hakurei turnips are a new turnip variety for us, recommended by other growers.  They are amazingly sweet and can be eaten raw in a salad if you like.  They can also be cooked and the greens lightly cooked as well.

Coming Soon
Next week, another batch of leeks, more winter squash (delicata, I think) carrots and we hope to have more turnips.  It looks like we’ll have broccoli again next week to be followed by cauliflower  (weather permitting).

Farm News
It is a delight to write this while we’re still reveling in the wonder of  Fall Work Day.
It was a fantastic day!   We had beautiful weather, delicious food, good people – and tons of work got done to boot.  Does it get any better than that?

Todd Thorsgaard  and Darlene and Tom White welcomed people and made sure everyone knew the work of the day.  Loads of folks headed out to the potato field to join Mike and the tractor digging potatoes. Karen Schilling, Sue Poore and Sharon Shervey headed up the Sunshine squash and pie pumpkin harvest.  Tom Powers and Mike Drysdale oversaw the hoop house work which included gleaning tomatoes and partial dismantling.  Short the necessary tools, they used ingenuity to get the work done.  Thanks guys!  Mike & Rose Scanlan got people going cleaning up garlic,  Brenda Beyer took charge of sprucing up the perennial garden while a crew gleaned peppers for others to take home.  Sue Poore, with assistance from Maggie, Peter & Danielle sent anyone who wished on a scavenger hunt searching for berries, Brussels sprouts and long-time members among other things.   Amanda Douglas, Shelley Thron & Paul Glewwe, along with many helpers, made some really delicious apple cider.  On soup detail, Helen Torrens took charge of the Potato Leek Soup and Sandra Haff, the Farm Veggie Soup while George Socha with Shelley Thron, Mary Yee and Bob Wright kept the fire burning.   Both soups were mighty tasty and a big thanks to all who fed us so well.  Karin Matchett, Barb Mohr, Linda & Fred Harding and Angie & Andrew Barker all pitched in to get the meal set-up and then cleaned-up.  Your work was much appreciated.   Well over 100 folks worked together, played together and ate together.  It was a true community effort. THANKS EVERYONE!
