Next week we’ll have leeks for you, some turnips and probably spinach and fall broccoli. We’ll start the winter squash coming and we’ll send some potatoes. I think we’ll have some red peppers and if the weather holds, more roma tomatoes.
Spring Hill Fall Work Day September 21st
Spring Hill’s Annual Fall Work Day is Sunday, September 21st, 11:00am-4:00pm this year. Weather and vegetables permitting, we’ll dig potatoes, harvest squash, clean-up the hoop houses, make soup, press apples into cider and generally have a good time. Bring some food to share, dishes to eat on, and your work gloves!
(We’ll eat at 3:00 so if you may want to bring some snacks.) If you have thoughts about kids activities and want to help plan and carry them out, let me know. We’ll also need volunteers to lead work projects, run the cider press, tend the fire and help with clean-up. Let me know if you’re interested!
Tomatoes
We won’t be taking orders for canning tomatoes this year – there just aren’t the numbers out there but we will box some up and send them in to the pick-up sites as we have them available and there is space in the delivery cars. If you’re interested in preserving, help yourself!
Farm News
What a week! The weather has been gorgeous and just what we needed to push the squash and other fall vegetables along. The delicata and sunshine squash look good and I think we’ll harvest those on Sunday at our Fall Work Day. The butternut squash and pie pumpkins could use a little more time so we’ll leave those and hopefully they’ll ripen before the next frost arrives.
We’ve spent the week sprucing things up a bit and getting organized for the fall work day. The apples were picked by last Saturday’s crew so we’re set for cider making. The potato bags are ready to be filled and the digger is in working order. We made our Rice Lake run for various supplies. The soup pots have been located and cleaned-up and the wood collected. Now we just need a farm full of people!
The raspberry patch has, once again, been a delight. Members who have come out for the past several weeks have picked and taken home raspberries to enjoy – one of the perks of coming to the farm this time of year.
In our home we’ve eaten more raspberries in the past month than most people eat in a lifetime. They’ve taken the form of raspberry pies, raspberry malts, raspberry jam, raspberries with granola and yogurt and, frequently, simply nibbled throughout the day. We’ve even managed to get some in the freezer. Last year Mike bought me a berry picking basket from a basket maker we met in Amery. It is a lovely basket and a huge part of the pleasure of picking comes from tying that sweet basket around my waist and watching it fill with berries. The full basket is a beautiful sight! This year Mike and the kids got me a fishing pole for my birthday. They must be wanting a main dish with their raspberries!
