Coming Soon
We took a week off of carrots – didn’t want you turning orange! We’ll probably bring those back next week. We may have eggplant again. We will likely have melons, tomatoes and maybe our final round of beans. We’ll have some more broccoli next week and soon some cauliflower.
Let’s fill up the calendar!
f you haven’t yet signed up for your day yet, please do so by contacting Michele Gersich at 612-378-0380 or mgersich@att.net. Take a look at the sign-up calendar to see where there are openings. We do need someone for this coming Tuesday, September 1st!
Thank You!
I want to extend a very heartfelt thank you to our work crew this summer. It’s important that they know and you know that we couldn’t do it without them.
Farm News
The rains have continued. In just two hours we got two inches of rain early Tuesday morning. The fields are pretty wet at this point which has made it impossible to get any greens planted for the fall. We do have some cover crop in where the early veggies were and as more crops are harvested, we’ll continue to plant cover crop. We have a nice stand of buckwheat where the early broccoli and cabbage, several patches of peas & oats that are coming along and we’re trying out a patch of sorghum- sudan grass to help combat purslane. These cover crops will add organic matter, prevent erosion and help with weed control. You can’t go wrong with that!
We pushed hard this week to get the onions and shallots out of the wet fields and up into the greenhouse where they will continue to cure. The onion crop looks particularly good this year. The shallots are a new variety for us and are in your bag this week. They are called “saffron” and have a copper colored skin with a pale yellow interior. We had been growing a red shallot so this will be fun to try.
We have some beautiful broccoli for you this week. Thankfully it managed to ripen just between bean harvests. We should have it for the next week or two. We’re also keeping an eye on the cauliflower as well as some nice cabbage. This is the time of year when the end of summer and early fall veggies overlap. The weather cools a bit so it’s okay to turn the oven on. There’s some mighty good eating to be done!
