Harvesters Needed!
Looking at the harvest/delivery calendar for Tuesdays in September and October is a little scary! If you haven’t yet signed-up for your work day at the farm, please consider doing it soon. We really do count on each of you to do your day. We love meeting each of you and it’s also an opportunity for you to visit the farm where your vegetables come from, share in the work and meet some other farm members. Of course, it’s also how your vegetables get from the farm to the city each week. To sign-up “view calendar” to see where we have openings. Next, e-mail Michele with your requested date. Of course, you’re welcome to give Michele a call at 612-378-0380 to sign-up as well.

Farm News
This bag of veggies is what I think of as the height of summer bag. It’s got tomatoes, eggplant,, zucchini and peppers – everything you need for ratatouille. There’s hot peppers, tomatoes and cilantro – all the fixins for a fresh salsa.. Add to that cucumbers, onion, garlic and cherry tomatoes – the ingredients for a cucumber salad – toss in a vine-ripened melon and you’ve got summer!

The August tireds that I was hoping to ward off this summer have taken up residence in my bones. It is a temporary state of being, brought on by an accumulation of labor and sunshine – oh and maybe staying up too late to watch Olympics.
The raspberries have come on strong now and each day we nibble our way to the fields. As one of the crew said, “we follow the 12-step program – take 12 steps, have a few berries, 12 more steps, a few more berries… The berries are another great reason to come out for your harvest day soon – folks have been taking home a nice batch of berries.

Of course I have to mention how dry it is. Today is terribly windy further drying things out. There’s a good chance for rain tonight and we’re hopeful we’ll get some. We’ve been moving irrigation pipe around the farm, paying particular attention to the things we need to push along for the fall bags. We’ve got some newly germinated spinach, turnips and arugula that need a good drink. We also need to keep the winter squash, Brussels sprouts, carrots and cabbage moving along.

Amber made some brownies for everyone today as a send-off for Jackson Hinde today, a young man who joined our work crew this summer. He is off to the UW-Madison. He filled in as others went off on summer outings and was a great addition to our crew. We wish him well.
