Farm News
It’s a little scary to think it’s mid-August--- and I don’t even want to mention the “s” word which is what our stalwart crew will return to in just another three weeks. Actually the work has started to shift around here. There’s just a little bit of transplanting (lettuce and kohlrabi) and seeding (spinach, turnips and arugula) to do, not too much weeding and a whole lot of harvesting. We’ve tilled under the early broccoli and greens beds and have planted them to a pea/oat mixture. This will provide a nice thick cover and will winter kill giving us easy access to these fields in the spring. The onions were just knocked down today which will begin their curing process. After about one-third of the onions have fallen over on their own, we knock down the tops of all the others. In a couple of weeks, the tops will be dry. We’ll pull those off and bring them up to the greenhouse for further curing.

It’s irrigation time again! We’ve been putting water on the potatoes, winter squash, leeks and even the raspberries. It’s dry out there. I’ve got an inch of rain on order but so far it hasn’t arrived.

We escaped to the south shore of Lake Superior on Wednesday. Mike and I got the cucumbers picked before David and Maggie got up and then we piled in the car and headed north. First stop (after the bakery and Louie’s Finer Meats in Cumberland for picnic fixins) was a blueberry farm in Bayfield which brought this from David, “Why do we always have to pick something when we go away?” Truthfully we didn’t stay very long but we did get some tasty blueberries for fresh eating and freezing. Then we headed right for the beach. After waiting out some rain in the car, we got in a few hours of swimming and tossing a frisbee around. After that, on to Bayfield for fudge and saltwater taffy. It’s amazing how exhausting a day off can be!
