Thanks from Robin & Glendale Food Shelf
I’d like to extend my gratitude to all of the Spring Hill members who have generously donated their “vacation shares” to the Glendale Food Shelf. So far, we’ve been able to provide them with over 70 pounds of beautiful produce from the Spring Hill community, and the residents of the Glendale neighborhood couldn’t be more appreciative. I’ve had many questions about how to use certain vegetables, so it’s been fun for me to introduce easy ways to make healthful dishes and to share the wonderful recipes that are included in the weekly newsletter. I will continue to provide shares throughout the growing season, so if you know that you will be unable to use your share please let Mike and Patty know so they can have your share delivered to the food shelf. Again, many thanks!! Robin Schow
Spring Hill’s Bulletin Board
We invite any and all to take advantage of the Bulletin Board on our web site. Announce an event you’re involved with, a resource, a good book, a business venture, a service you offer …
Several members have posted announcements. You’ll fine information about solar ovens, grass-fed beef, woodworking, massage, and the sales & salvage of reusable building materials. This week Spring Hill members, Monique Sletta and Michael Scanlan are announcing their new business called “Roughly Square.” Check it all out!
Farm News
We had a storm come through on Tuesday night that left ¾” of rain! It was very timely. Our neighbor said she got up in the night and thought about going to the basement. I slept through the whole thing – must have been tired.
With the help of irrigation and a mighty fine work crew the gardens are in pretty good shape. The cooler spring/early summer has brought us some very, very nice lettuce, greens and broccoli. What a great year for broccoli! Sometimes those early crops can come and go so quickly in the heat. They may bolt, turn bitter or all come at once. This year though the cooler weather has extended their harvest making it a very bountiful spring.
Things are shifting at this point, moving away from lots of leafy greens to the mid-summer veggies. Of course we’ve started sending cucumbers and zucchini already and this week you’ll taste the first carrots of the season. By next week we’ll have new potatoes, the first onions and maybe green beans. We made the decision to hold back on sending potatoes this week. Our potatoes were hit by several frosts in late May and early June. They were set back a little bit each time and we’re going to give them an extra week before beginning the harvest. They look beautiful though and I can’t wait for the first new potatoes!
Our plan is to begin the garlic harvest this Saturday so you will have the first fresh garlic of the year in your bag this week. It’s best to store the early heads in your refrigerator as you would a fresh onion.
Coming soon
Next week new potatoes! The next planting of sugar snap peas will be ready, more cux and zux and probably beets and chard – garlic too.
