Tree Planted in Honor of Nuala Kernan
A Red Maple Tree was planted to honor Nuala Kernan at our Spring Work Day on May 30th.
Nuala had been a farm member since its beginning and over the years served on our Core Group, Delivery Committee, worked on our early newsletters and was a pick-up site host and enthusiastic community member. Nuala died last August of ovarian cancer. Brenda Beyer did a lovely job of leading the tree planting and remembering Nuala who she said would be with us as along as we keep passing on the stories. The tree is just below the perennial garden, a place where Nuala often ended up Spring Hill work days, working and chatting. see more photos

Farm News
We’ve gotten some rain and some heat since last week and the garden is exploding. The tomatoes, peppers, melons and winter squash are settling in and beginning to grow. The zucchini and summer squash are even beginning to set fruit. The greens are continuing to do well and the potatoes have taken off.

Now that school’s out, we have our work crew back. What a good thing that is! They’ve cleaned up the potato patch, trellised peas and tomatoes and now it’s on to the garlic. They are a great bunch of workers. Roy, Matt, Amber, and of course David and Maggie have all worked here before which makes our life very easy. They already know where the tools are kept, how to move irrigation pipe, can tell a plant from a weed AND they work well together. Sarah is joining us this year, taking the place of her brother Jackson who worked here last year and is now living in Madison. We’re also joined by Owen who is helping out one day a week.

Our Tuesday and Saturday work crews have also been a big help. In addition to some harvesting, lots of washing, bundling and packing, these folks have transplanted basil, lettuce and fennel, trellised peas, moved tomato cages and done some garden clean-up.

I should also mention we had a couple of really nice Spring Work Days earlier in the season. Thanks so all the folks who came out on those days we got some of the early spring work done in a “many hands” fashion. It’s definitely more fun that way!
